XAUUSD trading: how to trade gold in forex without getting chopped up

By Liam, founder of Affinity Capital Markets

XAUUSD is simply gold priced in US dollars, and it is the most traded gold instrument in the world. It is also the pair most of our members trade every day. Gold moves fast, respects technical levels beautifully, and punishes sloppy risk management harder than almost any other market. Here is how to trade it properly.

Why gold trading is different

Gold is not a currency and it is not a stock. It is a safe haven, which means it reacts to fear. Interest rate decisions, inflation data, US jobs numbers and geopolitical shocks can move XAUUSD fifty dollars in minutes. That volatility is the opportunity and the danger at the same time.

The pip maths also catches people out. On most brokers a one dollar move in gold is 100 pips, so a routine twenty dollar swing is a 2,000 pip move. If you size a gold trade like a EURUSD trade, you will be stopped out or wiped out before lunch.

The best times to trade XAUUSD

  • The London open, roughly 8am to 10am UK time, when volume arrives and the day's direction often sets.
  • The New York open, roughly 1:30pm to 3:30pm UK time, especially around US data releases.
  • Avoid the quiet Asian session unless you are trading a clear range. Chop is where gold accounts go to die.

How to size a gold trade

Decide your risk in pounds first, then let the stop loss distance set the lot size. Risking £30 with a 20 dollar stop means each dollar of movement should be worth about £1.50, which is roughly 0.15 lots on a standard account. Never pick the lot size first and squeeze the stop to fit. Gold will find your stop.

The mistakes that catch new gold traders

  • Trading through major US news without a plan. Spreads widen and stops get slipped.
  • Using tiny stops on a volatile pair. A 5 dollar stop on gold is noise, not risk management.
  • Chasing a candle after a big move. If gold has already run 30 dollars, the trade is gone.
  • Revenge trading after a stop out. Gold will still be there tomorrow.

A simple way to start

Mark the previous day's high and low, the Asian session range, and the obvious weekly levels. Then watch the London open for two weeks without trading. Note how often price sweeps a level before the real move. When you start seeing it before it happens, you are ready to trade it small.
